Where do the numbers come from?

The calculator starts with typical values. Check these three things to make the result more useful for your own home.

Start with watts, not the star rating

Look for rated input power in W or kW on the appliance nameplate. A star rating compares efficiency with similar products; it is not the number to enter as watts. If your label only gives annual energy in kWh, use the annual-energy option in the air-conditioner calculator instead.

Use your actual time and electricity rate

A 75 W fan used for 8 hours consumes 0.6 kWh each day: 75 รท 1,000 ร— 8. Over 30 days that is 18 kWh. Multiply 18 by the price per kWh on your bill to estimate its energy charge. Fixed bill fees and taxes may still be extra.

Treat the result as a starting point

A thermostat-controlled appliance may draw less than its rated input for part of the day. Fridges cycle on and off, and an air conditioner's load changes with weather and settings. For a closer result, replace the suggested values with figures from your label, bill, or a plug-in energy meter.
